Vikings struggling to settle on Peterson's backup

Adrian Peterson is running toward yet another fine season, but his backups have not seized their opportunity to make their mark yet. When the valuable Chester Taylor left in free agency, the job was left to rookie Toby Gerhart and Albert Young, who had 12 career carries coming into the season. Neither man has filled Taylor's role, which included great pass protection and receiving on third downs and the occasional spell for Peterson for a few series per game. Gerhart and Young have combined for 13 carries for 35 yards and the team's pass protection — which of course includes the QB, offensive line and tight ends, too — has not been up to par as Brett Favre has been hit too often, despite what Brad Childress has said about that subject. Gerhart lacks Taylor's third-down skills and he's not showing much creativity as a runner, even if the effort is there. Young has limited ability and is serviceable at best.
