Did he return to coaching for this? Florida's once-indomitable coach Urban Meyer, who nearly left the game late last season to deal with health issues, is now dealing with a completely new kind of difficulty: mediocrity. For the first time in his head coaching career, Meyer has not been able to direct a team with an upward trajectory.The latest hurdle came Saturday night as perpetually mediocre Mississippi State shut down the Gators' offense in The Swamp for a 10-7 victory. Replacement kicker Chas Henry missed a pair of field goals, including the possible tying field goal with four seconds left to secure the loss. The Gators' offense moved the ball at times, totaling 361 yards, but could not punch the ball into the end zone with any regularity.
Florida has fallen to, in succession, Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State. It is difficult to tell which is worse, either. The Alabama loss was the second straight to Nick Saban and seemingly a permanent changing of the guard in SEC leadership. LSU snuck by thanks to a nearly botched fake field goal try and a touchdown pass that was well covered but thrown just well enough to beat the defense. And then there's the Bulldogs, perpetually in the SEC cellar and now led by former Meyer assistant Dan Mullen.
