CLEMSON, S.C. --- Andre Ellington is Clemson's replacement for C.J. Spiller, if such a thing can really exist.
On the day Spiller returned to Death Valley to have his number retired, Ellington pieced together a reputable impersonation of his predecessor.
Ellington returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, and added a rushing score in the second half, as the Tigers routed Maryland 31-7 at Memorial Stadium to avoid an 0-3 start in the ACC.
As was the case throughout Spiller's career over the past four seasons, Clemson relied on special teams to upend an opponent. The Tigers used a punt return deep into Maryland territory to set up a touchdown, collected a 42-yard field goal and were helped when the Terrapins missed a 33-yard attempt.
But it was Ellington, who stepped into Spiller's old kickoff return job for the first time this season, who made the biggest difference.
