UFC 120: Carlos Condit KOs Dan Hardy

by Michael David SmithDan Hardy and Carlos Condit exchange kicks at UFC 120 on Saturday in London.Dan Hardy complained heading into his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 120 that Condit and his trainer, Greg Jackson, are too cautious and try to win dull decisions. He can't say that anymore.

Instead, Condit knocked Hardy out with a brutal left hook in the first round of their bout in London on Saturday.

After the televised card got off to a dull start with three straight decisions, Condit changed everything by standing and trading shots with Hardy. After a couple minutes of action, Condit and Hardy both threw left hooks at each other at the same time, but Condit's landed just in time to send Hardy to the canvas. Condit landed a couple more on the ground to erase any doubt.

UK football notebook: Cats disappoint in final scrimmage

Joker Phillips didn't mince words or try to hide his disappointment Saturday after the University of Kentucky completed its final football scrimmage of the pre-season.

Phillips' first fall camp has been extremely physical, and with the Louisville game a week away, Phillips put his team through a "dress rehearsal" situational-type scrimmage that called for limited contact.

The results, according to Phillips, were not good.

"We've got a lot of work to do," he said. "If we were to play today, it would have been an embarrassment. We weren't into this thing mentally, which is baffling. We've got to be better next week and get our guys prepared for different situations. The good thing is we've got seven days; the bad thing is we've got seven days.

"This team has got to decide what they want out of this football season, whether we want to be a good team, a great team, or an average team. Today we were not into this thing."

UFC 121 Predictions

by Michael David SmithBrock Lesnar will defend his UFC heavyweight title at UFC 121.The heavyweight championship of mixed martial arts is on the line at UFC 121 Saturday night in Los Angeles, and Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez is such a big fight that the UFC easily could have made a killing on pay-per-view even if they had filled the undercard with scrubs.

But the four undercard fights on the pay-per-view are actually very good ones, and this five-fight card might just be the best pay-per-view the UFC is offering this year. We've got the preview and predictions below.

Brian Wilson is Awesome

I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of that ridiculously dark fake beard of his, but Brian Wilson is pretty awesome. He dominated the Phillies for the last week, and after watching this interview on “Cheap Seats,” I think he’s pretty damn funny and/ or a totally psycho queerbag. Regardless, the guy’s fun [...]Read the full original article...

John Clay: Cats good but not great, again

This isn't Joker Phillips fault.

He's a first-year head coach.

But if you're a Kentucky football fan, you can be forgiven for that familiar fall feeling.

After Saturday night's 44-31 loss to Georgia, the Cats campaign has taken the form of the past few seasons. It's good but not great. It's probably bowl-eligible but not great-bowl-eligible. It's not a step back, but it's not a significant step forward either.

For the third time in the past five seasons, the Cats sit 4-4 overall. For the second straight year, they are 1-4 in the SEC. There's no real chance at a division championship. There's no real chance at a New Year's Day Bowl, not without some considerable breaks along the way, and certainly the breaks did not go UK's way on Saturday.

San Jose Sharks 2010: Calgary Burn Niemi, Sharks

Calgary 4, San Jose 0

1 star - M. Kippursoff, 27 saves

2 stars: R. Bourque, 2 goals

3 stars: A. Tanguay, 2 assists

This Sharks team can't get everything clicking for 60 minutes. After winning two in a row and scoring 10 goals in those wins, the Sharks laid an egg offensively and looked worse on defense in a 4-0 loss to Calgary.

Defensively the Sharks looked lost, but not as lost as goal minder Antti Niemi. There wasn't even nine minutes off the clock before Niemi had allowed three goals to the flames in the first period. Looking at Niemi's last three starts, he has allowed 12 goals and has a 3.71 GGA.

This is a true problem for the Sharks, and coach Todd McCLellan needs to make the change to Niittymaki, at least for now. Just take a look at the Pittsburgh Penguins who benched their No. 1 goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and have gone 4-0. Niemi might be able to bounce back sometime in the future, but the Sharks just cannot afford him in between the pipes, especially with their current problems on defense.

On the other side of the puck, Calgary's Mikka Kippursoff looked good, finishing with 27 saves and his second straight shutout.

Kippursoff always plays San Jose hard since he was traded from the Sharks eleven years ago for a second-round pick. Although the Sharks did get defensive first liner Marc-Edouard Vlasic, the Sharks wish they had a No. 1 goaltender who they had some confidence in.

Offensively, San Jose did not show up. They had only six shots on goal after two periods, and the Sharks were out shot by the Flames 30-27.

The Sharks come home to HP Pavilion, and they need to turns things around. They are still looking for their first win at home, and hopefully, they can stop with the mental mistakes and put together a good all-around performance to get some momentum.

The Sharks welcome the scuffling New Jersey Devils to town on Wednesday. The Devils could be just what the Sharks are looking for as they have lost four of their last five.

They also made headlines by sitting Star llya Kovalchuk, who just signed his $100 million contract. Kovalchuk was back in the line up on Sunday's 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers.

Roddy White Steals the T.Ocho Show

Roddy White

ATLANTA -- The Bengals and Falcons served the Georgia Dome crowd one of those upside-down, hard-to-hang-your-hat-on-games that can be scrumptious. The Bengals arrived after a bye week and looked slow and lacked impacting intensity. The Falcons started fast, mailed it in and then hit the pedal again.

The Falcons led 24-3 at halftime.

The Bengals led 25-24 with 1:16 left in the third quarter.

Atlanta won it, 39-32, and improved to 5-2 as it rolls into its bye week. Cincinnati fell to 2-4 and has issues to sift through.

And though the game was tornado-like, one thing, one player was constant -- Falcons receiver Roddy White.

It must have been a treat for him to show Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens that they may one day be Hall of Fame receivers, but right now, they are not in his league.

White must have enjoyed the attention, the playmaking, the way he soared in the end zones and glided in all places in-between. He made the routine look spectacular. He made the spectacular look divine.

Spanish La Liga Roundup, Oct. 23

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi lit up the Spanish league with goals on Saturday as Ronaldo scored four times to lead Real Madrid after Messi tormented Zaragoza with a brace.

While Gonzalo Higuain started Madrid's 6-1 thrashing of Racing Santander, Ronaldo went on to score four for the first time in his career inside a 40-minute span to take his season-leading tally to 10 and keep Madrid top of the standings with 20 points.

"I like to win like this," Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said. "The more goals, the better."

Barcelona was next with 19 points after Messi scored either side of halftime in a 2-0 win at last-place Zaragoza, which has become one of the Argentina forward's favorite venues.

Messi followed up last season's hat trick at La Romareda Stadium with another dominant display. It started in the 42nd minute when David Villa drew four defenders with a run before slipping to Messi, who was alone on goalkeeper Antonio Doblas to score with a left-footed shot.

Zaragoza was reduced to 10 men from the 47th after Leonardo Ponzio received a red card. Messi took advantage by shooting a loose ball past Doblas in the 66th.

"That's Leo - today and always," coach Pep Guardiola said. "He's a goalscorer."

While Messi led a lackluster Barcelona to victory, Madrid picked right up from a convincing midweek win over AC Milan.

Higuain timed his run perfectly to reach Angel Di Maria's long ball alone on goal, controlling before slotting a low shot under keeper Antonio Rodriguez 10 minutes in.

Ronaldo skirted between two defenders to guide home Higuain's centering pass in the 15th, and the Portugal forward made it 3-0 in the 27th after Mesut Oezil found him streaking across the front of goal to redirect home.

The festive atmosphere at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium continued in the 47th as Ronaldo controlled Di Maria's centering pass at the edge of the box to curl around Rodriguez into goal.

Ronaldo scored his fourth with a penalty kick in the 55th.

"The last time I scored four goals in a game was when I played in juvenile league," Ronaldo told Canal Plus TV. Aww get it Cristiano

Ozil added the last from another breakout eight minutes later as Racing's defensive shortcomings were further exposed when the Germany playmaker capped a smart run with a curling shot into goal.

"People can feel euphoric but we have to remain calm," Mourinho said after his team gave four of the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground a show as they attended the game as special guests of the club.At Zaragoza, Barcelona struggled without playmaker Xavi Hernandez with Messi carrying the offense with several chances before Villa sprung him loose for the opening goal.

Braulio Rodriguez weakly shot at Victor Valdes after being played clear on goal by Angel Lafita in the 19th for Zaragoza's best chance.

Zaragoza, which appears set for another season-long relegation fight, was handicapped when Ponzio lashed out at Daniel Alves. Zaragoza never recovered from his exit and Doblas couldn't do much to stop the second as Messi pounced on the rebound from a Seydou Keita strike.

While Messi excelled, Villa continued to be frustrated over his inability to find the net despite plenty of chances. The Spain striker hit an angled shot off the near post in the 87th in his worst start to a season in seven years.

"We came here to win a game and not for Villa to score goals," Guardiola said.

Last-place Zaragoza remained winless through eight games, placing further pressure on under-fire coach Jose Aurelio Gay.

Also, Chori Castro scored twice as Mallorca hung on to beat Valencia 2-1.

Castro fired the visitors ahead with a seventh-minute penalty at Mestalla Stadium after Pierre Webo was adjudged to have been fouled inside the area.

Valencia keeper Miguel Angel Moya made a fine stop to Ratinho's low shot but the rebound fell to Castro to head home in the 29th for 2-0.

Roberto Soldado halved the advantage in the 36th with a coolly taken penalty but the hosts couldn't pull off the win for former president Arturo Tizon, who passed away this week and was honored with a minute's silence before the start.

Valencia's second straight loss left it on 16 points alongside Villarreal.

In Sunday's games, it's: Getafe vs. Sporting Gijon; Almeria vs. Hercules; Osasuna vs. Malaga; Espanyol vs. Levante; Sevilla vs. Athletic Bilbao; and Villarreal vs. Atletico Madrid.

Deportivo La Coruna looks for its first win of the season on Monday at Real Sociedad.

Inconsistency at quarterback plagues Raiders

It's not hard to find reasons for yet another poor start by the Raiders. There have been breakdowns in pass protection, a porous run defense and a missed 32-yard field goal by PK Sebastian Janikowski that cost them a win in the final seconds against the Cardinals in Week Three.

Inconsistent play and personnel at the QB position, which have been issues for the team for several seasons, including the current one, loom large, too.

In the four-plus seasons since Kerry Collins left after the 2005 campaign, the Raiders have started eight different quarterbacks. Only one of them finished with more touchdown passes than interceptions in a season in which they started more than four games for Oakland — it was the much-maligned JaMarcus Russell in '08. The first overall pick in the '07 draft finished with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 13-8 in 15 starts that year before being cut after last season.

Some within the Raiders' organization, including Al Davis, thought they had at least a short-term solution to that problem after acquiring Jason Campbell from the Redskins in April. Oakland signed him to a two-year deal, and Davis compared him to Jim Plunkett in the offseason.

Campbell lost the starting job to Bruce Gradkowski after just 1½ games, though, and didn't do much to redeem himself when he received a second chance to tighten his grip on the job.

Gradkowski injured his shoulder against San Diego on Oct. 10, and after helping the Raiders beat the Chargers, Campbell had an awful showing when he started in a loss to the 49ers the next week. With an offensive line that struggles to keep defenders at bay, Campbell hasn't responded well to the pressure, whereas Gradkowski has shown more of an ability to improvise.

Heading into Week Seven, head coach Tom Cable is trying to decide whether to start Campbell, who is battling through the knee injury he suffered vs. San Francisco, or No. 3 QB Kyle Boller, as Gradkowski isn't expected to play. Regardless of who starts, Cable is not happy with the way Campbell has performed.

Gradkowski is still considered the No. 1 quarterback, but he's playing on a one-year tender, and the Raiders may go back to the drawing board when it comes to finding a solution at quarterback next offseason, even if he re-signs.

Brett Favre Tried to Call Jenn Sterger in 2009, Says Manager

The New York Post reported Saturday that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre contacted former New York Jets game hostess Jenn Sterger in June 2009, nearly one year after he allegedly sent her the inappropriate text messages that have dominated the NFL season.

The report was confirmed by Favre's business manager, Phil Reese, who told The Associated Press that the quarterback did indeed try to call Sterger. Reese declined comment when asked if there were multiple calls, but said Sterger did not answer the phone.

According to the Post's source, Favre was in New York to appear on "Joe Buck Live" and was not yet a member of the Vikings when he attempted to contact her, while Sterger was no longer employed by the Jets. Said the source: "The same number that was used to send the messages in 2008 is the same one used to call Jenn in 2009, when Favre was in New York to film [the HBO show] 'Joe Buck Live.'"

Sterger has yet to speak with the NFL about the situation, and according to Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, will not do so if her and Favre reach a financial settlement.

Belichick's maneuvers compensate for weaknesses on 'D'

Following are several whispers we've heard recently from around the AFC East:

• Some people questioned head coach Bill Belichick's defensive prowess after the unit's collapses earlier this season. But the Patriots' head coach can still outsmart the best of them, using, for example, a new formation with just one defensive lineman on the field on passing downs. He also throws undrafted rookie LB Dane Fletcher and seldom-used LB Shawn Crable onto the field as part of the sub package, and both players have made solid impacts this season.

• ILB Bobby Carpenter joined ILB Erik Walden and special-teams coach John Bonamego as Dolphins special-teams casualties, getting cut after the Week Six game. Carpenter, a former first-rounder, missed a block on a partially blocked punt against the Packers, his third special-teams miscue. OT Lydon Murtha has made two of his own, missing a block that allowed the Patriots to block a Miami field-goal attempt and a holding penalty that nullified a field goal against the Pack. He could be on thin ice the way things have gone, but he's needed for OT depth.

• Second-round pick Torell Troup didn't see the field much during the Bills' first five games, registering eight tackles and no sacks before the bye week. But with the team struggling against the run, the 315-pound rookie nose tackle will see the field more often now, adding bulk to the defensive line. Opponents have rushed for a league-high 182.4 yards a game against Buffalo, as the team's 3-4 defense hasn't been able to plug holes along the line.

• The Jets have been pleased by the play of WR Santonio Holmes, who missed the first four games due to a suspension. Holmes stayed in terrific shape while he was away from the team, and he has contributed in both victories since returning, averaging more than 12 yards a catch. As Holmes and QB Mark Sanchez get more comfortable with each other, their production should increase.

Fantasy Football: Indianapolis Colts TE Jacob Tamme Set to Break Out

The way TEs are going down this year, you'd think we were talking about running backs.

The top three TEs off the board in almost every fantasy draft: Antonio Gates, Dallas Clark and Jermichael Finely. Finley and Clark are both out for the season, and now Gates is banged up.

Several other guys drafted to be starters have struggled (Witten, Celek and Shiancoe). Owners looking for an upgrade have picked up guys like Hernandez, Lewis and Watson, who are off to strong starts.

But can any of these pickups realistically be top-five options? Probably not, but it is possible. But now with Dallas Clark out for the year, his replacement, Jacob Tamme, does have top-five upside.

So Who Is Jacob Tamme?

Well, in my league, Clark's owner made the mistake of picking up Brody Eldridge, who has been listed as the backup TE for the Colts this season. I guess he didn't research it very carefully because Eldridge is used as a blocking tight end, Tamme is more built for Clark's role. It didn't take long, as Tamme has already been listed as the No. 1 TE on the Colts depth chart. Lucky for me I was able to grab Tamme after he made this foolish pickup.

So is this Tamme guy any good? Well he was drafted in the fourth round by the Colts in 2008 after a couple outstanding years at Kentucky. He led all SEC tight ends with 32 receptions for 386 yards and two TDs in his junior year. His senior season was even better: 56 receptions for 619 yards and six TDs. He was named to the first team All-SEC both seasons.

Scouting Report

He is 6'3", 240 pounds and ran a 4.60 40-yard dash at the combine. He is known for having great hands and making plays after the catch. He is used to lining up in the slot like a wide receiver, which should help him fit in to Clark's role. He is known for his impressive work ethic, which is an absolute necessity for anyone playing with Peyton Manning. Oh, and Tamme is pretty smart too. He earned numerous accolades at Kentucky while completing his degree in three years and getting his MBA before leaving for the NFL. That should help him get on the same page as Peyton.

Opportunity

He gets to play in place of Dallas Clark. He has Peyton Manning throwing to him, and Peyton seems to make everyone look great. I highly doubt that Peyton will stop throwing to the TE just because Clark is gone. Peyton doesn't seem to do that, instead he helps players step up when starters go down.

For those of you struggling at the TE position or just looking for a nice backup, Tamme is well worth a pick up. I picked him up to backup Zach Miller, and possibly use as some trade bait if he really gets going. I can in no way guarantee that he becomes an elite option, but Peyton has an excellent track record of turning "nobodies" into stars, so why not Tamme?

Brock Lesnar: Why the UFC Needs Him to Keep His Title

At 6.3" and a chiseled 265 pounds, Brock Lesnar is a mammoth of a man. The combination of his size, speed, athleticism, and strength is unlike anything MMA has ever seen nor will probably ever see again.

Over the past three or so years Lesnar has become a major player within the sport, and will only continue to be a top draw as long as he keeps winning.

However, tonight at UFC 121 a man by the name of Cain Velasquez will try to put a stop to "King" Lesnar's reign.

Now while Velasquez winning the strap from Lesnar would be a history-making event from the standpoint of it being the first time that a Mexican Heavyweight would own a championship in a combat sport, this would ultimately not be great from a financial point of view for the UFC.

If you watched any of the UFC Primetime shows from the past few weeks, it couldn't be any more obvious that a Velasquez championship win tonight would be quite boring, and might actually lead to a decline in interest within the division.

You might think that I am being harsh, but let's look at the facts:

- Each fight which has featured Lesnar has been a major draw. In fact, since UFC 91 against Randy Couture, the pay-per-view buy rate has gone over 1 million. I can't imagine Velasquez being able to pull in the same type of numbers.

- Unfortunately, while Velasquez seems like a nice guy, he's only really marketable to one demographic.

- Lesnar provides the perfect villain anytime that he fights. Even as a "changed" man, he will still draw the ire of many MMA purists who feel that he is an outsider that came from pro wrestling.

In addition to being the perfect villain, there is just something about Lesnar that makes you want to watch him. He's this massive monster who just dedicates himself to training for fights, and wants nothing to do with the obvious pitfalls of the MMA lifestyle.

While it would be great for Cain to win, just to see someone take down the beast from Minnesota, Dana White and company better hope that Lesnar wins.

Ron Hornaday Wins Kroger 200 Martinsville Truck Series Race In Eventful Race

In looking at how things were boiling down for the start of the Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway this afternoon, everybody knew it'd be a battle between Ron Hornaday, Kyle Busch, Todd Bodine and Kevin Harvick.

At the beginning, it'd look to be Busch's race to lose as he led. However, when strategy started taking place, it began changing from one person to the other.

Todd Bodine pitted early due to starting near the back, and then when the leaders pitted, he was able to gain track position and get to the lead.

Bodine led from gaining that spot up front till Kyle Busch caught him and passed him.

Though with less than 20 to go, Hornaday took charge on a late race restart and took the lead the hard way—on the outside—and never looked back.

"I got tears in my eyes," Hornaday said in victory lane. "This is so cool. I hate to be a baby. There's a lot of people that have got thing going on. Shane Hmiel, Todd's mom, it's just emotional. Harvick said this paint scheme was unbeatable and we kept it going."

This marked Hornaday's first win at Martinsville, despite being the king of the short tracks in the Camping World Truck Series. This also marked the first time that the famed grandfather clock was given for a race less than 250 laps.

"This is Martinsville—I won it," Hornaday said. "I got a grandfather clock."

This marks a highlight in a season that some would call a disappointment for Hornaday, as the four-time champ currently is outside the race for the championship. Rumors began that possibly, Hornaday would be leaving Kevin Harvick Incorporated, though with new crew chief Butch Hilton, those rumors look to be disappearing.

"It's so cool to have Kevin and Delana have the confidence in me and give me Butch and the guys to do this." Hornaday said.

"To have Butch and the guys get Ron Hornaday in this victory lane at Martinsville is pretty cool." Kevin Harvick added.

Busch ended up second, leaving him yet again without a win at the Martinsville paperclip.

"I gave it all I had," Busch said. "The truck wasn't as good as the KHI trucks all day."

While Bodine has the driver's championship pretty much locked up, the battle for the owner's championship is heating up. Coming into the race, the No. 30 of Germain Racing, driven by Bodine, led the No. 18 of Kyle Busch Motorsports, driven by Busch, by 36 points. Bodine finished third, though there was no points change as Bodine led the most laps.

"This is how you win championships," Bodine said after the race, competing just hours after the death of his mother. "We didn't have the best truck, but we got third."

Bodine and Busch look to battle it out to the end as they've already had their run-ins, including a conversation following Bodine's win at Kentucky this year. Martinsville was no exception to their battle as they fought hard side-by-side, and at one point, Bodine was accused of trying to fool Busch on a restart.

"If they think I was trying to do a slow restart to fool Kyle Busch, they are wrong," Bodine said on the radio at that time. "I just didn't get a good restart. Message delivered—I'll work on it."

Kevin Harvick, who won the spring race at Martinsville, finished 15th after an eventful day that included run-ins with multiple drivers. The run-in that caused the most discussion would be Harvick vs. the Red Horse Racing drivers, Timothy Peters and Justin Lofton.

Battling side-by-side, Peters and Harvick made contact multiple times, which resulted in Harvick cutting a left rear tire down. Harvick then spun out and tried to get the car re-fired while Johnny Sauter got wrecked at the other end of the track, bringing out the caution.

NASCAR deemed that Harvick was part of the reason for the caution, not allowing him to get the lucky dog (giving him his lap back) as he had fallen a lap down in the process. Some could say this changed the entire outcome, as it put Harvick back and made the hole bigger. Had Sauter not spun, there would've been no caution as Harvick wasn't in the way.

Once Harvick got back on the lead lap with approximately 15 to go, he then tried to mount his charge, yet ended up running into issues with Lofton. Lofton made contact with Harvick, causing further damage to Harvick's truck, during a wreck that started with Sauter and Lofton. Emotions were displayed after the race as Harvick drove up the back bumper of Lofton's truck on pit road.

Though while we're here, Sauter should be warned for his actions as instead of answering the black flag and coming down pit road to get the loose sheet metal removed, Sauter brake-checked Lofton down the backstretch, causing a bunch of other drivers to wreck in the corner and a caution.

Cristiano is Consistency

By Dominic Vieira, writing from Lancaster University

Tonight there?s a classic European crunch between Real Madrid and AC Milan, the two most successful clubs in the competition promise a truly exhilarating 90 minutes of top quality football. An ecounter of this dimension engages some of the greatest stars onto the historic Bernabeu field where Robinho will aim to haunt his old club, Ronaldinho returning to the ground where he scored one of the best goals in the worldandMesut Ozil will be tyring to score his first European goal. From a managerial point of view, this match is Jose Mourinho?s first real challenge for the Spanish giants.

However, the player to look out for will be Cristiano Ronaldo who hasreinventedhimself under the Portuguese manager after a disappointing World Cup.

Real Madrid?s most expensive player has been in buzzing form this season scoring 6 goals in 7 league games and assiting on 5 occasions. He also scored in both of Portugal?s last Euro 2012 qualifying victories against Denmark and Iceland. What has been the secret behind his form: The manager? His speed? Maturity? Intelligence? The answer is his consistency.

Fantasy Football Week 7 Rankings: TE

Vernon DavisLast weekend wasn't a pleasant one for most of the top-tier fantasy tight ends. And yes, many fantasy owners felt some (not nearly all) of the pain. The best tight end in the game, Antonio Gates, went down with an apparent ankle or toe injury. We still aren't 100-percent sure what or how significant the injury really is. And more important, we aren't sure if he'll even play this weekend. Add Chris Cooley to the list with a concussion, Dallas Clark is out "indefinitely" and Vernon Davis suffered a bruised knee. Ouch!

To make matters worse, the bye weeks deplete us of regular studs Dustin Keller and the aforementioned Dallas Clark. There are plenty of viable options that could be good fill-in spot starts. However, more than ever you've gotta pay attention to the injury wire and see who gets the start on Sunday. You have to downgrade Gates slightly, even if he plays, but you can't bench him if he is going to play. So, for this week we're rolling with Vernon Davis as the pack leader and, provided he does play, he draws a very favorable matchup against the Panthers. Look for big, big numbers.

As for the rest of the ranks...

Javier Pastore and Josep Ilicic have been arguably the best duo in European football so far this season. Playing as the men behind a lone striker in a 4-3-2-1 has seen them develop a great partnership. Check out these goals (one by each) from Palermo?s win against Bologna this morning.

Vikings struggling to settle on Peterson's backup

Adrian Peterson is running toward yet another fine season, but his backups have not seized their opportunity to make their mark yet. When the valuable Chester Taylor left in free agency, the job was left to rookie Toby Gerhart and Albert Young, who had 12 career carries coming into the season. Neither man has filled Taylor's role, which included great pass protection and receiving on third downs and the occasional spell for Peterson for a few series per game. Gerhart and Young have combined for 13 carries for 35 yards and the team's pass protection — which of course includes the QB, offensive line and tight ends, too — has not been up to par as Brett Favre has been hit too often, despite what Brad Childress has said about that subject. Gerhart lacks Taylor's third-down skills and he's not showing much creativity as a runner, even if the effort is there. Young has limited ability and is serviceable at best.

Non-AQ Report: San Jose State's Resources Depleting

San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre didn't mean to be disrespectful to Boise State when on Monday's teleconference he said his team was a "J.V. football team" during the 48-0 shellacking at the hands of the Broncos. He was simply pointing out how depleted his team was starting to look.

The Spartans have lost 12 starters -- 15 players total -- to season-ending injuries. MacIntyre started seven true freshmen and doesn't even have 50 scholarship players to put on the field.

"I have never seen anything like this in my life and I hope I never see anything like it again," MacIntyre said. "We are really, really thin. It's tough to compete."

The Spartans lost starting tailback Lamon Muldrow to a torn ACL against Boise State. Reserve linebacker Ryno Gonzalez (knee) and offensive tackle John Konye (neck) also were injured. Throughout the season, San Jose State has lost All-WAC first-team safety Duke Ihenacho (foot), starting linebacker Pompey Festejo (foot), starting center Robbie Reid (knee), starting tight end Ryan Otten (toe), starting LB Kyler O'Neal (knee), and starting DE Mohamed Marah (shoulder). Starting quarterback Jordan La Secla has been playing with bruised ribs.

SEC fines UK $25,000 for on-field celebration

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference announced Thursday that the University of Kentucky will be fined $25,000 for a violation of the league's policy concerning access to competition area. The violation occurred after Kentucky's 31-28 football victory over South Carolina last Saturday when fans flooded onto the field at Commonwealth Stadium.

Kentucky's last violation occurred on Oct. 13, 2007, after its 43-37 victory over top-ranked LSU. Its other violations, both in football, occurred on Nov. 4, 2006, and Sept. 15, 2007, after wins over Georgia and Louisville, respectively.

PAC-12 divides into North / South divisions, commissioner explains championship game site

PAC-10 commissioner Larry Scott confirmed this afternoon the new PAC-12 will be divided into a North Division and South Division.  The first PAC-12 conference championship game will be played in 2011 at the home stadium of the team with the best overall conference record.

Scott also confirmed the conference will operate an equal revenue sharing conference.  The only stipulation is if the conference does not make over $170 million, then USC and UCLA would receive an additional $2 million from the conference.  The revenue plan kicks in during the 2012-13 academic year.

A North Division will consist of Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State.

A South Division will consist of Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado, USC, and UCLA.

Scott said, ?All rivalries have been kept completely intact.  We have agreed to a 9-game conference schedule with five division games and four cross-divisional games. Protecting all traditional rivalries was an important principle in the structure.?

The northern California teams will play the southern California teams every year.

Scott said that the schools will be able to publish their 2011 and 2012 schedules within the next 30 days.

The division of the conference is only for the sport of football.

Regarding the team with the best overall conference record getting to host the championship game, Scott said, "The idea of a collegiate atmosphere, rewarding the fans, and having it be something you earned were all priorities."

Long: More comfort with scheme key behind Rams' improved pass rush

Rams Nation is getting a real rush these days, in more ways than one.

In addition to becoming a bona fide contender in the NFC West in Steve Spagnuolo's second season as head coach after winning only one game last season, the Rams have seen their pass rush make major strides.

Only six games into the 2010 season, the Rams have picked up the pressure to the tune of 17 sacks, only three fewer than they managed the entire '09 season.

What's the difference?

"I think our attention to detail is the big reason, and that just comes with a better understanding of the scheme," Rams DLE Chris Long told PFW three days after being one of three different defenders (DRE James Hall and WLB Larry Grant were the others) to register two sacks in the Rams' 20-17 upset win over the Chargers in Week Six.

"This year the guys know exactly where they need to be. Last year we were close to knowing, but we were always just a second late. A blitz would knock off another blitz, and things like that."

Picking up on his strong finish to the '09 campaign, Long leads the Rams in QB hits and QB pressures. But when asked what things he could be doing better, he told PFW "there were too many to list.

"I can still get a lot better every week," Long said. "There are at least one or two things a week that I really need to work on the rest of my career."

Another major reason behind the Rams' greatly improved defense is the offseason addition of veteran DT Fred Robbins, who played under Spagnuolo on the Giants' defense that came on so strong on the road to the Super Bowl three years ago.

"He's made a huge difference," Long said of Robbins. "He's an inside guy who can get off the rock and disrupt things, which helps our defensive ends a lot. We all feed off of each other."

Long also couldn't say enough good things about Hall, another old-timer who is off to a terrific start with a team-leading six sacks.

"James Hall has always been one of the most underrated players in the league," said Long. "People are just paying more attention to him because of the numbers he's been piling up. I've learned a lot from him. He's a real technician."

Week 7 Sleepers: Danario Alexander Ready to Make 'The Leap'

Danario Alexander

The main theme coming out of Week 6 -- besides the slew of injuries wreaking havoc on fantasy lines -- is, "Who the heck is Danario Alexander?"

Undrafted out of Missouri, Alexander had the size and college resume you want from potential No. 1 receivers in the NFL. Standing 6-foot-5, Alexander had a humongous senior season, catching 113 passes for 1,781 yards and 14 TDs. Despite the big season, a knee that had multiple surgeries scared NFL teams away.

Needing a fill-in for Mark Clayton, the Rams signed Alexander off the practice squad heading into Week 6. Quarterback Sam Bradford showed confidence in the rookie leading up to the game, and he showed even more confidence on the field, connecting for four passes, including a 38-yard TD strike.

While 72 yards in a debut may not make fantasy owners stand up and take notice, Alexander's great senior season, great size and instant rapport with Bradford puts him squarely on the sleeper list for the remainder of the season. He's on the verge of leaping up the fantasy rankings throughout the remainder of the season.

Unverified Voracity Pulls Out The Durr Sharks

Too busy to read the message board? Watch it. So this happened. It is a NSFW postmodern message board conversation verbalized by xtranormal:

Listen to the British woman.

Lord of the flies. An injury update from Penn State has more bad news for the Nittany Lions:

"Latimore, I'd be doubtful if we get anything out of Eric the rest of the year, although he may be ready for a game or two. Crawford has not done anything yet. ... I doubt if he'd be ready this week. Crawford might be ready next week."

That would be Eric Latimore and Jack Crawford, the nominal starting defensive ends. Latimore will be out for Michigan, with Crawford either on the bench or gamely giving it a go. Sean Stanley's status is still up in the air after it was revealed his violation of team rules was a marijuana arrest. He's practicing with the team and I'd be shocked if a simple possession charge would keep Stanley out four games. He's already missed two. Unless there's something else going on he'll probably start in Latimore's place, with either Crawford or unimpressive journeyman Kevion Latham on the other side of the line.

If Michigan held Iowa's DEs in check, the rag-tag PSU DEs shouldn't be a problem. Michigan will have a test against Still and Ogbu on the interior.

Penn State has a bunch of walking wounded they hope to get back for Minnesota; we'll see how many do.

And now a random dumb thing a Penn State blogger said. Take it away, Some Guy At BSD:

I hope that Denard Robinson gets healthy during Michigan's bye week and starts at QB in Happy Valley Halloween weekend. Choir boy / line-dancer Tate Forcier may provide more visual fodder for the blog, but I think he's a bigger threat at QB than Robinson. Denard Robinson can run all over weak competition, but in the Big Ten, where every defense is designed to stop the run, a competent passer like Tate Forcier is actually more deadly.

This is not factually wrong so it's not Fiutakin' it, but good God. This is the worst bit about turning it over seven times in two weeks while racking up 900 yards of total offense against the #28 and #13 defenses in the country:

shark_derp_durr_hurr

"It doesn't work in the Big Ten" cannot die soon enough.

This is a disturbing indictment of nothing in particular. Will Campbell is going to get a look at guard:

“He may be better-suited to play guard,” Rodriguez said.

No decision had been made, but Rodriguez said he’d convene with his coaches tonight to discuss possible position changes.  …

“He’s not playing much on defense,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know if it’s possibly to switch and learn a position that quickly, but we’ll probably talk about him tomorrow. He’s got a good attitude. He’s working hard and is willing to do whatever’s best for the team.”

What does it mean? It means that ESPN was right to be skeptical of Campbell, who has a ridiculous physical package but doesn't play football very well. It was apparent to me the first time he got on the field against Iowa and immediately got gashed; freshman or not the passivity and inability to get under anyone's pads was alarming. This would be no big deal if Michigan had gotten either or both of Pearlie Graves and DeQuinta Jones a couple years ago, but since they whiffed on both the depth chart at DT is thin enough that one guy not working out leaves you a big hole after Martin.

It does not mean that Bruce Tall is an idiot who can't coach—Mike Martin and Ryan Van Bergen say STFU, please. Also Brandon Graham.

Not their fault, except for that one guy. The BCS computers come in for another round of bashing, this one in the New York Times. At least this time there are quotes from the guys who run the things complaining about the What About The Children decision to remove margin of victory from the metrics. That is a major source of computer rankings DERP. And this is a delightfully blunt assessment of Richard Billingsley:

“I’m not a mathematician,” Billingsley said. “I’m not even a highly educated man, to tell you the truth. I don’t even have a degree. I have a high school education. I never had calculus. I don’t even remember much about algebra. I think everyone questions everything I do. Why is he doing that? Does he know what he’s doing, a crazy kook in Oklahoma?”

The short answer is no. Billingsley’s ranking system is vilified by professional mathematicians and a subculture of amateur computer rankers.

I'm not either but I've already got my vilification in. Any attention Billingsley's inane system gets that might get it booted is welcome. I mean: "It is a simple formula, he said, because he is a simple man." This guy isn't fit to decide what to eat for breakfast, let alone who should be playing in the national title game.

Just a love machine. The MZone highlights a program from 1978 featuring the sex machine that is Mike Gittleson:

78 staff

You have to admire that dedication to facial hair: 32 years without even thinking about a change. Also, yes, that Jack Harbaugh.

Hail Zoltan! Zoltan just launched the punt of the year, nay the punt of the decade:

During the Patriots OT struggle with the Ravens last Sunday, punter Zoltan Mesko may have made the punt of the year. Facing a 4th and 6 from their own 16, Mekso was called in try to bail out the Patriots.

Typically, punts from that region of the field net about 39 yards, putting the Ravens at their own 45, and it looked like the Ravens were going to win the field position battle. From there, it only takes one or two first downs to move into striking distance for a game winning FG attempt. When Mesko trotted onto the field, the Patriots' win probability (WP) was 0.33.

Mesko’s punt went for 65 yards, aided by wind and by poor fielding by the Ravens returner. When the ball came to rest on the Baltimore 19 yard line, the Patriots had gained the upper hand with a 0.54 WP. The punt was worth +0.21 Win Probability Added (WPA), an impact extremely rare for a punt that neither results in a long return nor a fumble.

Hagerup did something similar—though it wasn't in such a high-leverage situation—when he bombed one past the Iowa returner midway through Saturday's game.

Really? Iowa guy who looks at a lot of film says this:

A couple of times Iowa made good audibles and a couple of others they missed their chance to hit Michigan where it hurt. It definitely seemed the crowd noise was a factor late in this one and it made it hard to change calls at the line. I would guess they'll make some tweaks to their audible calls this week, especially on their scripted series calls.

That would be something close to unprecedented. Woo luxury boxes?

Etc.: Entertaining WSJ piece on alumni cheerleaders focuses on Michigan's homecoming festivities. Hey let's fire Turner Gill already! (Note: it took all of two months for Gill to go from a molder of men to a "Victorian-era" fuddy duddy what with his rules against ladies and cell phones. Rich Rodriguez should start a support group.) Twelve pictures to sum up TRY FIGHT WIN. One of these five men will be Minnesota's next coach. (HT: Eleven Warriors.)

Killing of St. Johns County woman sparked by DVD dispute

Brittany Tavar was ?still alive for a little while? after being beaten in the head with a hammer at her house in St. Johns County in July, the man accused of killing the 45-year-old told investigators.

Joseph Dean Roberts, 26, told detectives he then cut Tavar?s throat with a kitchen knife and wiped down the blood that was ?everywhere? before wrapping the body in sheets and trash bags.

Roberts, who had been on the run for three months before being charged in Seattle with shoplifting meat from a deli, made the statements in an Oct. 13 interview in a Seattle jail before being brought back to Florida on a charge of stealing Tavar?s Toyota.

He was the last person seen with her before her disappearance was reported July 10. He was charged Tuesday with murder.

According to investigators, he admitted to killing her July 7 after an argument over DVDs he made that she was planning to use that day in seeking a restraining order against a former friend in an adjacent neighborhood.

The permanent restraining order was against Anne Richardson, 52, who had befriended Tavar but backed away after a confrontation and attack in Tavar?s South Ponte Vedra Beach home in 2009.

?She attacked me,? Richardson said Wednesday. ?She stabbed me, she strangled me, she hit me with a wine bottle.?

Related: Evidence points to foul play in case of missing St. Johns woman

Though investigators eventually sided with Richardson, it was Tavar who called authorities and said she was the victim.

She told deputies she was assaulted and told them ?she said she was going to kill me,? according to the police report.

That incident affected Tavar, said her sister, Patricia Bellamah.

?My sister was extremely traumatized by that experience,? Bellamah said. ?My sister was very afraid of Anne.?

Deputies had responded twice to calls involving Tavar and Richardson, once in January 2009 and once in May.

Tavar was charged with battery in her home after deputies said she fought there in January 2009 with Richardson.

In May, Tavar reported she was a victim of criminal mischief at the Serenata Beach Club, claiming Richardson threw her video camera in the pool.

Richardson, who said Tavar was harassing her by videotaping her, was charged with criminal mischief but the charge was dropped.

On July 7, Richardson showed up in court about the restraining order, but Tavar did not.

Richardson said Wednesday she became friends with Tavar after the two met walking their dogs.

?She loved coming to my house,? she said. Richardson said she would work in her garden while Tavar sat and chatted.

The two bred their dogs, Richardson said, and sold the puppies.

Richardson did not know Roberts but said Tavar did have boarders, including one who said he was told to sleep in the yard. Tavar, who was supported by a family trust, was known to take people in.

She said that made other neighbors nervous.

?Everybody stayed away from her and nobody spoke to her,? Richardson said. ?Having people sleep in your backyard next to a $400,000 house is not safe.?

Richardson said she does not know what was on the DVDs Roberts made but said it may not have pleased Tavar.

?She could push your buttons,? she said.

When he was questioned in Seattle, Roberts told detectives he made the DVDs before going to bed and left them out for Tavar. He said he woke up on July 7 while Tavar was ?going off about something.?

The Sheriff?s Office has not reported what was on the DVDs.

Roberts was cooperative with investigators in Seattle, they said. In less than three hours they learned Tavar?s remains were located off Florida 207 near St. Augustine.

After killing, he fled west

?He withheld the details and downplayed his story in the beginning,? detective George Harrigan told Times-Union sister paper The St. Augustine Record. ?But it didn?t take long for him to be cooperative and forthcoming.?

Roberts? account of what happened does not help explain Tavar?s death, said Bellamah, who said she expects to have ?waking nightmares? about the killing.

?The facts of the case sort of speak for themselves,? she said. ?There aren?t words adequate to this.?

Roberts was not involved in the civil case involving the DVDs in any way, reports show.

?I don?t know what was going on in his head,? Bellamah said. ?Nothing was keeping him from walking out the door.?

Tavar had compassion for people, she said.

She said her sister was known to help those who were down and out and had delivered food and clothing to a homeless camp near where her body was found.

After the attack, Roberts cleaned with bleach, filling five or six bags with materials used to scour the house, the affidavit said.

After dark, he said, he left in her dark blue Toyota RAV4 to take her body to the woods. Initially he thought of putting her in her attic but abandoned that plan.

He told investigators it was difficult to put her in the SUV because rigor mortis had set in.

He brought a shovel to bury her but had problems digging into the terrain, according to investigators.

After leaving the body, he returned to the house and slept for a while before leaving for good in the SUV.

He told investigators that he took Tavar?s two dogs with him to buy him some time.

Tavar?s dogs were found wandering in a rural area outside Columbia, S.C., over the weekend of July 8. Veterinarians were able to identify the dogs through embedded microchips. They are now with a friend of Tavar?s in Jacksonville.

From South Carolina, Roberts headed toward the Pacific Northwest. Investigators followed Tavar?s credit card transactions through North Carolina, Idaho and Oregon, records show.

On July 11, he was stopped by police for excessive speed in Evanstown, Wyo., but was let go with a warning. He was seen later that day buying a tent and clothes from a Walmart in Ontario, Ore. He soon abandoned the vehicle in a Seattle library parking lot, where it remained for two months.

The trail was dead until his arrest by Seattle police.

Carmelo Anthony: 8 Reasons Why Lakers Should Consider Trading Andrew Bynum

Andrew Bynum has been both a source of frustration and hope for the Lakers ever since his noticeable absence in the 2008 NBA Finals contributed to the Celtics' exploitation of the Lakers' interior.

The hope has stemmed from his potential. When healthy, Bynum has continually shown flashes of All-Star, even Hall of Fame potential.

The frustration has stemmed from his reality. Though few players in the NBA can match up to Bynum's strength, size and raw talent, Bynum is rarely able to capitalize on any of the above due to the multitude of knee injuries he's suffered over the last three seasons.

Is it time to part ways with the young center and add a proven heavyweight scorer?

Here are 8 reasons the Lakers should at least consider it.

Injury Spin Cycle: DeSean Jackson Could Go Morneau Route

Filed under:

DeSean Jackson injuryOne of Week 6's enduring images -- for all the wrong, grisly reasons -- was Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson lying motionless on the field after being knocked out by Dunta Robinson's helmet-to-helmet hit. The NFL fined Robinson $50,000, but fantasy owners, who now stand to lose at least that much in total winnings as their top receiver sits out with a concussion, will see none of it. Concussions are always tricky to predict -- there are degrees and recovery lengths that vary from one to the next -- but the general consensus is that Jackson is definitely out for this week, then has a huge question mark hanging over his head for the November 7 game against Indianapolis after their bye on Halloween weekend.

Just to put things in perspective, Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau suffered a concussion after sliding into the knee of Toronto's John McDonald on July 7 of this year; he didn't play another game the rest of the season, even missing the playoffs. And that was baseball, where you don't get pounded by a defender running full steam at you every time you catch a ball. Bottom line: Jeremy Maclin moves to the WR1 position and his value goes up, and Jason Avant, who is always good for a random game of 100-plus yards each season, becomes the second target in the Philadelphia offense.
