The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t just lose their Monday night game against the Tennessee Titans in lopsided fashion, they also lost starting quarterback David Garrard and backup Trent Edwards for this Sunday’s game in Kansas City against the Chiefs.
So, with the signing this week of journeyman 38 year-old Todd Bouman, the Jags picked up a starter for this Sunday who hasn’t started in the NFL since 2005, with the New Orleans Saints. And just in case Bouman gets hurt, the team also signed Patrick Ramsay.
So what does this all mean for the Jaguars and Chiefs game at Arrowhead on Sunday? It means expect a heavy dose of Maurice Jones-Drew.
Jones-Drew is averaging about 20 touches per game and 3.9 yards per rush, but with one of two journeyman quarterbacks running the Jags offense, Chiefs fans should expect to see a lot of Jones-Drew on Sunday. He will be facing his toughest test this year, running against a Chiefs defense that ranks No. 5 in the NFL this season in stopping the run.
So unlike the past two weeks when safety Eric Berry and his teammates in the Chiefs secondary had to respect the passing offenses of the Colts and Texans, expect to see the Chiefs loading up with eight or nine men in the box to stop Jones-Drew and the Jags running game.
Inside linebackers Derrick Johnson and Jovan Belcher lead the Chiefs in tackles this season, and combined with Berry’s ability to stuff the run from his safety position, the Jags offense should be in for a long day on Sunday.
