UFC 120: Carlos Condit KOs Dan Hardy

by Michael David SmithDan Hardy and Carlos Condit exchange kicks at UFC 120 on Saturday in London.Dan Hardy complained heading into his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 120 that Condit and his trainer, Greg Jackson, are too cautious and try to win dull decisions. He can't say that anymore.

Instead, Condit knocked Hardy out with a brutal left hook in the first round of their bout in London on Saturday.

After the televised card got off to a dull start with three straight decisions, Condit changed everything by standing and trading shots with Hardy. After a couple minutes of action, Condit and Hardy both threw left hooks at each other at the same time, but Condit's landed just in time to send Hardy to the canvas. Condit landed a couple more on the ground to erase any doubt.

UK football notebook: Cats disappoint in final scrimmage

Joker Phillips didn't mince words or try to hide his disappointment Saturday after the University of Kentucky completed its final football scrimmage of the pre-season.

Phillips' first fall camp has been extremely physical, and with the Louisville game a week away, Phillips put his team through a "dress rehearsal" situational-type scrimmage that called for limited contact.

The results, according to Phillips, were not good.

"We've got a lot of work to do," he said. "If we were to play today, it would have been an embarrassment. We weren't into this thing mentally, which is baffling. We've got to be better next week and get our guys prepared for different situations. The good thing is we've got seven days; the bad thing is we've got seven days.

"This team has got to decide what they want out of this football season, whether we want to be a good team, a great team, or an average team. Today we were not into this thing."

UFC 121 Predictions

by Michael David SmithBrock Lesnar will defend his UFC heavyweight title at UFC 121.The heavyweight championship of mixed martial arts is on the line at UFC 121 Saturday night in Los Angeles, and Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez is such a big fight that the UFC easily could have made a killing on pay-per-view even if they had filled the undercard with scrubs.

But the four undercard fights on the pay-per-view are actually very good ones, and this five-fight card might just be the best pay-per-view the UFC is offering this year. We've got the preview and predictions below.

Brian Wilson is Awesome

I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of that ridiculously dark fake beard of his, but Brian Wilson is pretty awesome. He dominated the Phillies for the last week, and after watching this interview on “Cheap Seats,” I think he’s pretty damn funny and/ or a totally psycho queerbag. Regardless, the guy’s fun [...]Read the full original article...

John Clay: Cats good but not great, again

This isn't Joker Phillips fault.

He's a first-year head coach.

But if you're a Kentucky football fan, you can be forgiven for that familiar fall feeling.

After Saturday night's 44-31 loss to Georgia, the Cats campaign has taken the form of the past few seasons. It's good but not great. It's probably bowl-eligible but not great-bowl-eligible. It's not a step back, but it's not a significant step forward either.

For the third time in the past five seasons, the Cats sit 4-4 overall. For the second straight year, they are 1-4 in the SEC. There's no real chance at a division championship. There's no real chance at a New Year's Day Bowl, not without some considerable breaks along the way, and certainly the breaks did not go UK's way on Saturday.

San Jose Sharks 2010: Calgary Burn Niemi, Sharks

Calgary 4, San Jose 0

1 star - M. Kippursoff, 27 saves

2 stars: R. Bourque, 2 goals

3 stars: A. Tanguay, 2 assists

This Sharks team can't get everything clicking for 60 minutes. After winning two in a row and scoring 10 goals in those wins, the Sharks laid an egg offensively and looked worse on defense in a 4-0 loss to Calgary.

Defensively the Sharks looked lost, but not as lost as goal minder Antti Niemi. There wasn't even nine minutes off the clock before Niemi had allowed three goals to the flames in the first period. Looking at Niemi's last three starts, he has allowed 12 goals and has a 3.71 GGA.

This is a true problem for the Sharks, and coach Todd McCLellan needs to make the change to Niittymaki, at least for now. Just take a look at the Pittsburgh Penguins who benched their No. 1 goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and have gone 4-0. Niemi might be able to bounce back sometime in the future, but the Sharks just cannot afford him in between the pipes, especially with their current problems on defense.

On the other side of the puck, Calgary's Mikka Kippursoff looked good, finishing with 27 saves and his second straight shutout.

Kippursoff always plays San Jose hard since he was traded from the Sharks eleven years ago for a second-round pick. Although the Sharks did get defensive first liner Marc-Edouard Vlasic, the Sharks wish they had a No. 1 goaltender who they had some confidence in.

Offensively, San Jose did not show up. They had only six shots on goal after two periods, and the Sharks were out shot by the Flames 30-27.

The Sharks come home to HP Pavilion, and they need to turns things around. They are still looking for their first win at home, and hopefully, they can stop with the mental mistakes and put together a good all-around performance to get some momentum.

The Sharks welcome the scuffling New Jersey Devils to town on Wednesday. The Devils could be just what the Sharks are looking for as they have lost four of their last five.

They also made headlines by sitting Star llya Kovalchuk, who just signed his $100 million contract. Kovalchuk was back in the line up on Sunday's 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers.

Giants Prevail On a Scary, Tense Night to Reach World Series

It really is a mesmerizing ballclub, not because the wildest crowd in San Francisco swings orange towels to erupt in a crazed frenzy, and not because the Giants closer Brian Wilson wears a beard to initiate a catchy mantra that has fans chanting ?FEAR THE BEARD,? but they are an amazing ballclub because the Giants [...]Read the full original article...
